Grenda is a third generation Australian family business maintaining its position as one of the major players in the Australian bus and coach industry. Grenda Corporation is a bus manufacturing and mass transit company, delivering over twenty-five per cent of Melbourne’s public bus system. In conjunction with its public transport operations, Grenda owns 25% of the bus manufacturing business, Volgren. Grenda runs a commercial charter coach company, and operates route-bus services predominantly in the south-eastern regions of Melbourne, under contract from the State Government. Grenda is also a fifty per cent partner in Australian Transport Enterprises. Grenda Corporations fleet is one of the youngest and most technologically advanced in the industry and currently exceeds 1,400 vehicles across Perth, Brisbane, Adelaide and Melbourne.
Grenda was founded in 1945 by George Grenda. After selling his milk truck, he purchased six small buses, four bus routes and the primary foundations of a bus depot in Dandenong that collaboratively would become Grenda’s Bus Services. In the 1950’s the second generation became involved in Grenda. Both Lance and Ken were active within the business. However, in 1989 Lance sold his interest in Grenda to Ken. In the sixty-six years of Ken’s stewardship the employment levels rose from about 60 people to approximately 2,000 (including ATE). He also made major directional changes to the business, namely the transition into coaches in 1965.
On 18 November 2011, Grenda announced that it was acquired by Ventura Bus Lines.[1]
Bus Appearances
The current colours used by Grenda's are White, Red and Yellow. These colours are mainly seen on the modern low floor buses and some coaches.
The SmartBus colours used by Grenda's (as well as Eastrans, Invicta & Ventura) are Orange and Silver, and buses that wear this livery are primary used on Routes 900, 901 and 902
Many older buses & coaches used by Grenda's are still in the old Red and Off-White livery, while more recent repaints of older buses are simply plain white.
